What is Chatter?

Chatter is a language-learning app concept designed to give users more control over how they study. Unlike many apps that follow a strict, linear course, Chatter allows learners to choose specific modules based on their personal needs, whether that’s for work, travel, or everyday conversation.

Inspired by my own experience wanting to learn restaurant-related vocabulary to communicate with coworkers, the app focuses on situational and purpose-based language learning. As users complete modules, new buildings appear in their growing village, visually representing their progress and reinforcing the idea that language learning is not linear, it takes a village.

Challenges

I knew exactly what I didn’t like about other language-learning apps. Many require users to follow a strict course that doesn’t always align with how they personally want to learn. One challenge in designing Chatter was figuring out how to bring all of my ideas together into a cohesive and functional app experience.

I started by focusing on the visual tone. I wanted the app to feel fun and game-like rather than something that feels like homework. To support this, I developed a bright color palette and created a mascot named Spek, who helps bring personality to the app. Spek appears in introduction screens, success screens, and other moments throughout the experience.

Results

By the end of this project, I was able to accomplish the goals I set out to achieve. I combined my love of storytelling with interactive design to create an app concept that makes language learning more engaging and personalized. Chatter introduces a game-like experience where users can choose their own learning path and focus on topics that matter most to them. Through immersive visuals and flexible modules, the app encourages users to explore language learning in a way that feels natural, fun, and tailored to their needs.
